Guide
How much does it cost to build a website with AI?
The sticker price of an AI website builder is rarely the whole bill. You either pay a platform for credits, or you pay a model provider for tokens. This guide separates those two bills so you can estimate a real project before you start.
Two bills, not one
Credit-based builders (typical Lovable / Bolt / v0 style plans) charge a monthly platform fee and meter generations against a credit or token bucket. When the bucket is empty, work pauses even if the site is half finished.
BYOK builders like NixSite charge $0 for the platform. Your only variable cost is the provider invoice for the tokens the agent used - or $0 if you stay on a free tier or run a local model through Ollama.
Rough ranges (order of magnitude)
Provider prices change, so treat these as planning ranges rather than quotes. A simple marketing landing page often takes a handful of agent turns: on mid-tier cloud models that is commonly well under a few dollars of API usage, and sometimes cents on cheaper models or free tiers.
A small interactive tool or multi-page site with several redesign passes can land in the low single-digit dollars of API spend on BYOK - still usually less than one month of a mid-tier credit subscription if you iterate a lot.
Where credit products hurt is burst work: a weekend of heavy prompting can exhaust a monthly allotment. BYOK turns that into a usage line item instead of a hard stop.
| Project shape | Credit-based builder | BYOK (e.g. NixSite) |
|---|---|---|
| One landing page, light edits | Uses part of monthly credits | Often cents to low dollars of API |
| Weekend of heavy iteration | Can exhaust monthly credits | Scales with tokens used |
| Many throwaway prototypes | Credits become the bottleneck | Pay only for what you generate |
| Local / free-tier models | Usually still need a plan | Can be $0 platform + $0 API |
How to keep AI website costs low
Write a sharper first prompt so the agent does not redo layout five times. Prefer a cheaper model for scaffolding and a stronger model for polish. Export early so you can edit by hand when the remaining work is CSS tweaks.
On NixSite you can start at /build, connect a free-tier or low-cost key, and only switch to a premium model when the structure is right. That is the practical answer to "how much does it cost to build a website with AI" for most indie projects: platform $0, API spend you control.

Questions
- Is building a website with AI free?
- It can be. With a BYOK builder like NixSite the platform is free; if you use a provider free tier or a local model, inference can also be free. Credit-based builders usually require a paid plan once the trial credits run out.
- Why do people say AI website builders are expensive?
- Because many products meter generations. Heavy iteration burns credits fast. BYOK moves the cost to raw API usage, which is usually cheaper for the same amount of experimentation.
- Does NixSite have a subscription?
- No. NixSite is free to use with your own API keys. Other BTA Labs products (such as Nix Agents plans) are separate.
